This might actually be my dad’s car years after he sold it. I’d post a picture of 6-year-old me next to the car if i could find one.

It caught on fire. In a parking lot. Spontaneously.

His car was imported from Germany before Mercedes lobbied congress to make it harder for Americans to import cars from other countries.

It took my dad’s mechanic 9 months to put his 230 E back together. once the car was running again my dad sold it at a swap meet, never telling the guy who bought it that it caught on fire.

This all happened in around 1999 - 2001. Unless you count old Volvo wagons, my dad’s old mercedes was the last interesting car he owned.

If my dad still had the car today, I guess it would be cool to talk about it on the internet, but in reality that mercedes was loud, shaky, slow, and unrefined. Exactly the opposite of what Mercedes is today.

W123s were great. I bought an ‘87 300D (W124) new. Turbo/trap oxidizer problems that MB fixed beyond the warranty. But so many little issues.

It’s important to note that standards were much lower decades ago. Also 25-35 years of aging probably didn’t help much.

Maybe as much as I dream of these, I’m better off just keeping happy memories and not actually driving one again.

But I doubt I’ll take my own advice.

My brother owned two early 80's 300d. Those cars definitely were not unrefined for being thirty years old. Much more refined than the $29k FWD stuff you can buy from Mercedes today. How the hell did your dad burn one down? They’re diesels with very little electronics in them. The door locks don’t even use electricity, they’re vacuum controlled.

I love my W123. Yeah it’s kinda loud, kinda shaky, and kinda slow, but it’s definitely not unrefined.

My parents had many of these when I was growing up. I was brought home from the hospital in one.

His caught fire, too. Except it was set on fire by someone who was mad at him. They lit the dry bushes in front of his car. My dad saw what happened and ran down to move the car, and “accidentally” backed into the other person’s door. Of course, nothing happened to my dad’s car because of those huge bumpers.

In all, I think my parents owned five different W123s.
